My ideas, dreams and aspirations running a small business

My dreams and aspirations

When starting my business I got excited with ideas. My dreams and aspirations were exploding daily as it is an amazing feeling to take the plunge into small business ownership. These exciting times also came with many concerns, worries and anxieties, as starting out was a time of the great unknown.

After starting my business I can say my dreams and aspirations changed slightly as I began to realise the reality of being a business owner. I learn so much on the job, so I do not see this as a negative. I actually think it’s a huge positive as I discover what is possible and what is not. I soon realised what abilities I have and where I sometimes need help. I know I am only human. I am a mother first and foremost but I also know I must provide for my family, so my best is always enough in all I do. I cannot dwell on the could haves or maybes, instead I focus on the now, being present and trying my absolute hardest.

My dreams and aspirations are to be able to balance work and life correctly, whilst pleasing my customers and making an income that suffices bills and life. Money is not everything but making a profit in any business is the end goal and certainly eases the stresses and strains of paying bills and keeping your head above water.

How to be successful in your dreams and aspirations

Success of dreams and aspirations is a individual thing – it’s how you visualise success, whether it be making a fortune, just maintaining normal life, winning a award, getting repeat custom or clearing some debt. Do not base your success on others, this is your own target and mindset. If you allow others to dictate your success you will forever be fighting for approval and that’s no way to start or continue in business.

My advice to anyone starting out is to not forget the planning, know your market whilst feeding your dreams with focus and motivation. Commit yourself 100% and know your goals. Anything is doable, you can achieve anything you want but being realistic is super important as we all have other commitments and things that come up. By being realistic you also decrease pressure that you put upon yourself.

Dreams and aspirations are the want to do well, the want to succeed and be your best. Those dreams you first thought up about business will change and divert because that’s life. Different moments create new opportunities or they help you see a better path. Go with the flow but obviously plan ahead and have goals whilst you are prepared for change. Be prepared to focus on new areas that come your way. Life is important and being you is the most important. Others may not share your dreams, but those who matter will believe in yours, even if they do not vision things the same. Take risks but be careful, follow your wants but weigh up the pros and con’s. Always believe in yourself because if anyone can make your business succeed it’s the dreamer who came up with the idea.

Dream big, focus and most importantly – enjoy!

Juggling motherhood and running a successful business

Pinterest post - Motherhood and juggling a business by silver memories with a picture of a mum trying to work on a laptop whilst her child reaches for the keyboard.

Running your own business can be stressful and extremely hard work at the best of times but, throw into the mix motherhood, then you have an even bigger challenge on your hands. Being a business owner is incredible and I love what I do with Silver Memories. I adore being a mum so I am happy with all my life choices but I have found you need to be extremely organised and find a balance that works for you. There is no point in sugar coating it – at times it is very hard and that balance can wobble and go out of sync at times. Despite this it is so rewarding knowing that you are conquering two amazing parts of life by yourself.

What I have learnt

What I have learnt throughout my journey as a business owner and mother is that you will never have all the answers. You will not know how to make your child sleep through the night. You will not know all the best ways to advertise your business. However, that’s OK! It’s OK to not know everything and accept many things have to be learnt on the job in both life and business. The moment you realise you are still learning and cannot figure out everything is the moment you stress a little less. Remember you are human and we cannot know and do everything. Just doing your best is the most perfect thing you can aim for.

During life as a mother, whilst running my own business, I know the importance of celebrating even the small wins. Achieving your list for the day, sending out some social media posts that have been drafted for days, having time with children for half an hour in the garden or getting orders out to customers on time may seem like small things, but everything you do in a day is a win. It is  you focusing on parenthood and your business. Reminding yourself how well you are doing is important for the mind as it is easy to lose sight of this or only focus on really big achievements. Every day you do something for your business or home is a big win. Never underestimate anything.

Find balance and make lists

Finding balance is the key to a successful business and keeping family life in order so I make sure I keep a list of everything, from what needs to be done for the business to what needs to be done at home. This may be appointments, shopping or even down time. Balance thrives on organisation, so make lists, set reminders and even plan your meals ahead. Trust me, when you have it all in front of you, in black and white, it makes life so much easier and it helps you to juggle two important aspects of life. So make lists and look at them daily!

Ask for help

This is something we all find difficult sometimes. Either we do not want to admit we cannot cope, or it’s hard handing over responsibility. Asking for help is important to your success and sanity because you are a parent foremost and you are trying to run a business for the better of your family. You already have earned every award out there but you are still human, we all get tired, we all get stressed and help is so amazing. Asking for someone to have the kids for an hour or handing over some business responsibility is good and if it helps you ease some pressure then its incredible. People who push through their struggles will burn themselves out which, in the end, can create more stress. Before that hill gets too steep – ask for help!

Persistence

Persistence is something that is needed not only in business but with being a parent. We do not get handed an instruction book for either, so its about doing your best and trying hard. Even when things seem their worst – if you feel your business will never take off or your toddler will never sleep again – trust me things can change if you persist. Remember Rome was not built in a day! Nothing happens overnight, some days will be a true struggle whilst others will be truly inspirational. Through the good, the bad and the ugly, one thing you have to do is persist. All your efforts will see your struggles improve, you must see the end goal not just the present one. Changing my mindset to think this way has made my work and life balance so much more positive. I have a clearer head which means I work better and life is brighter.

Be present

By being present I mean, whatever you’re doing, focus on that and be present in that moment. If you are working, focus on work and if you are with your child, be Mummy or Daddy. Be present in that moment with your children, forget work for now and enjoy the memories you’re building with your family. Children are not small for long and life is about moments and memories, so do not be distracted by work during family time. Make the most of those times with your children and remember your work will still be there tomorrow. Silver Memories is all about memories and moments, so we live by this rule. Being present is important.

The reality is that juggling motherhood and a business has it challenges. I will never say it’s easy, as that would be untruthful. It can be messy, stressful, hysterical, beautiful, scream in to a pillow and rewarding, all rolled up in one crazy bundle. However it is worth it, it’s worth the hard work and it has opened up my life in ways which are hard to quantify or qualify into words.

Be focused, be organised, be present and persist. These are the most important aspects to juggling a work, life balance.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum and it’s impact on daily life

What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum?

I know this subject very well as it was a condition I faced when pregnant with my last born. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a condition of severe sickness in pregnancy. On average only effects 1% of women. It is very rare but if you are unfortunate enough to have been effected by it, it is truly debilitating.

This terrible and exhausting condition means you struggle to keep any foods, fluid of medication down. This means you could suffer quickly with dehydration and weight loss. In pregnancy this can be very dangerous, as well as draining, for the Mummy to be and for all those that surround her. Kate Middleton was hospitalised when she suffered with this same condition which shows how severe it can be. Often you have no option than to get bed rest and be looked after by medical professionals.

 How Hyperemesis Gravidarum affected me?

I personally suffered with this and also had to spend time in hospital. I had to attend many appointments, whilst trying to run a business, look after my family and get through pregnancy. It was a tremendous struggle and one I do not wish upon anyone.

You always know in pregnancy you will be hit with nausea and vomiting at some point and this is the case for 70-80% of pregnant women, but HG takes you to a whole new level of worry and concern. The run of the mill pregnancy symptoms seem a breeze until you’re hit with HG. I am not saying that what other people suffer is not bad because I know all too well that it is, but HG has a huge impact on life and business, with the added worry of your unborn child as you have concerns about how it is affecting them.

I found this time in my pregnancy  journey very hard to bare and it caused great worries within my personal life. Looking after my family and my business was difficult. I could barely focus on the normal task of making breakfast, let alone run a business like I normally did. It really had a massive impact on everything and everyone.

Pregnancy is a worrying time anyway. Anyone who says it is not is sugar coating it because it pregnancy comes with worries. You are the sole carer and protector of your unborn baby, so when you have a severe condition that knocks you down, it can really increase anxiety and worries. On top of this, you are trying to maintain normality, which in all honesty takes a lot from you, and you have to dig very deep to fund the strength to carry on daily.

What are the main symptoms of Hyperemesis?

The main symptoms of Hyperemesis that I faced during my last pregnancy were nausea, extreme frequent vomiting, enhanced sense of smell and taste, food and/or fluid intolerance and lethargy. Trust me, this was like nothing I had felt before. These symptoms can then lead to dehydration, weight loss, Ketonuria, Anemia and Tachycardia (a heart issue), all of which are awful on their own and whilst you face normal pregnancy complaints.

What can you do if you think you may have Hyperemesis?

If you begin having any of the above symptoms, or just feel something is not right, always trust your gut instinct and seek advice from medical professionals. Never feel like you are being a pest or over-worrying. In my opinion over-worrying is always better than pushing your concerns to the side. With Hyperemesis there are things that can help, so seeking medical help quickly can save you facing such draining times.

I learnt through this time what really matters in life and that I cannot control everything. Plus leaning on others is a must as you need plenty of help, assistance and support.

Keepsake Jewellery and why it is so important

Here at Silver Memories, our whole business foundation is built around keepsakes and memories. After all, our items are created for our customers to signify just that. We love creating bespoke items like photos or fingerprints engraved on a special silver product because we know they will be kept and adored forever. To us giving the gift of a keepsake and bringing a memory to life is truly a special thing. Life is about memories and keeping a special moment alive forever. We love to make keepsake jewellery.

A keepsake is an object that has sentimental value. It’s an item that represents an association to a special someone or moment. An object that holds very dear and lovely memories. A keepsake jewellery item, like the ones we produce for our amazing customers, gives someone this sentiment. It becomes something they can treasure forever and then pass down to family. It continues to evolve even further with new sentiment as it is passed down and it creates stories that people can talk about for lifetimes to come. How can a gift get any better?

The definition of keepsake is: “anything kept, or given to be kept, as a token of affection and remembrance” This is the gift that keeps on giving as it spurs on thoughts, discussion and story telling. Life is precious and holding on tight to memories is imperative.

A keepsake jewellery item can be given or purchased for any reason. To celebrate a first Father’s day, to remember a loved one lost, to give thanks or celebrate a new born, the reason or occasion can be for anything dear to you. It’s about the meaning to you and the joy it will bring.

We have created some amazing items for our customers, they are all bespoke and all come with their own story and that’s what we love about our business. We are able to give people a sense of joy and a sense of purpose. We remind them what life is really about. To give or receive a gift of a keepsake is heart warming. It conjures up memories and takes you back to a moment that means a huge amount to you. Life should be about just that. It should be about meaning and holding on to those moments that define you or give your life true meaning.

We all have memories, good and bad, but as life goes on memories can become some what blurred. You can forget certain details that piece your story together, so having a keepsake can help replay things in your head. Every time you hold the keepsake you remember another puzzle piece. No-one can take those memories away from you as they engrave deeply into your mind. They are yours and yours only.

With the gifting season approaching, and after the last two strange years we have all endured, why don’t you consider giving a gift of a keepsake this year. You could show those around you that you are still there for them and, even when times are a little odd, you will always be by their side. 2020 and 2021 have shown us that life is precious and small moments can be magical. We appreciate the small things now because we have had our worlds turned up side down. Remember to appreciate those people you have in your life, remember times that make you smile and lets together make 2022 a new year that counts.
